Afraid to eat nuts while losing weight? Many people shake their heads at the mere mention of nuts: too many calories. But a meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials reached the opposite conclusion—adding nuts to a calorie-restricted diet (28-84 grams per day) had no effect at all on weight loss, waist circumference, or body fat[[1]].

In a 12-week trial at UCLA, 95 overweight adults followed a low-calorie diet, with one group adding 42 grams of mixed nuts per day and the other adding an equal-calorie portion of pretzels—both groups lost significant weight, with the nut group losing an average of 1.6 kg[[2]]. In other words: the same calories from nuts are no more "fattening" than calories from cookies.

Even better is the "craving-fighting" effect of nuts: a 16-week randomized trial found that replacing between-meal snacks with nuts significantly reduced cravings for sweets and fast food, and improved overall diet quality scores by 19%[[3]].
